Hi all,

First time posting on this sub forum. I have pair of Fiskars bypass pruners that are getting dinges up, and I'd like to get them back into fighting trim. What's the best way to sharpen these things? I have a Sharpmaker and a Gerber field sharpener at my disposal.

Thanks in advance,

Keith

i sharpen them all the time for a friend who has a lot of roses that she is constantly caring for but i use my paper grit wheel or belt sander. never use a regular grinder or it will trash the blade. i'm not sure if the sharpmaker or the field sharpener is the correct thing to use but if it would be possible for me to give you a call i can probably help you get the blade sharp with another method. if you do it wrong you can mess them up. here is my email addy rje196021@gmail.com

My personal favourite for trimmers are the DMT DuoFolds. I have a Coarse/Fine double-sided one that I use fairly frequently for that. Trimmers seem to be very forgiving with regard to angle and soforth.

you can put just about any angle that is close to factory. if you do it incorrectly you can mess them up. i have seen pruners messed up by not knowing how to sharpen them properly. i have seen scissors sharpened by a guy who thought he knew how to sharpen them only to turn them into scrap. these were the large wiss carpet shears and he put a v edge on both blades with a bench grinder :stupid:

For bypass pruners, sharpen only the beveled edge, not both sides. YOu can use a hand stone, it will just take longer. BEst thing to use is a belt sander/grinder, and if you are careful you can do it without taking the pruners apart.

gfe76, you have to take them apart in order to sharpen them if you want to do a good job and have them work good.

keith, if you have any problems let me know and i'll give you another call.
