I am new to the forum.

I am the new owner of a used #14 and the blade is REALLY dull, it appears never to have been sharpened.

What would be the best way to put an edge that can be used? Thanks for your help

I would probably use a belt sander to bring up a burr and then a paper wheel to remove the burr. Did you get the SS or the Carbon steel?

If you would like to have less chance of goofing up the edge or blade, I would use the Spyderco Sharpmaker. I would start with the 204D diamond rods and then proceed to the regular kit including the brown/gray stones and the white stones to finish. If you like, you could strop after the fine stones, but I believe if you did your job properly it is not necessary. :)

Can you post a picture of your recent purchase? Just curious. :)

Cheers, Doug

I owned a Randall number 14 many years ago. The steel is not that hard, and I just used a pocket carborundum stone from my boy scout days. Once in a while I used the small stone in the sheath pocket. It did just fine. I'd finish up by stropping on the back of my Dickies work belt.

Carl.

If you know what you´re doing all the above is fine. If not, have someone else (who does know) do it for you, and teach yourself sharpening on a cheap blade you don´t mind screwing up. ;)

What he said. Randalls are not the knives to learn sharpening on; they are too valuable.
