Sharpening a recurve blade

I'm new to the forum and I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right area or not. I've looked around and didn't find much that pertained specifically to recurve blades. What is the best way to sharpen them? Specifically my smaller blades like the CS Spartan, I don't have much of a problem with khukris and machetes. Then again a utility edge is really all I put on those. Thanks in advance for your help.

A contoured stone works easiest--either oval or round in cross section. :)

I usually freehand with fairly good success but spots on this blade are really aggravating me. Either it's time to invest in a more professional sharpening method, take it to a pro (hangs head in shame) or get rid of the blade. Thanks for all the help this far.

The edge of a stone works. 1/2 inch EP stones work. The round rods of the Crock Sticks work

My solution? I got rid of my recurves. (good riddance:D)

HeavyHanded, thank you, I never thought of just using the rounded edge of my stones. The vids helped a great deal. As soon as I'm done mirror polishing the blade on my Spartan I'll try your technique.

Ben, I'm not quite ready to get rid of them yet but I may be close if the edge of the stone doesn't work for me.

Just take your time smoothing the long edge out, if you don't get it nice and uniform, and contoured, the results won't be as good as they can be. Its a key factor.

There are contoured stones available(I believe DMT has one specifically for this) if you want to keep freehanding. The Worksharp WSKTS works naturally with recurves due to the 1/2" width belts. Paper wheels also do okay if you have a bench grinder handy.

If you're really strapped for cash though, grab some sandpaper, wrap it around a dowel or other round, cylindrical object(cup maybe) and have at it:thumbup:.

Correct. I've used 2500 grit wet/dry wrapped around a 1/2 inch dowel rod. For a few bucks you can also get a Lansky fine (white) Crock Stick.

It's really not that difficult, it just seemed to me to be an unnecessary PITA since the recurve serves no real purpose that I can ascertain.
