Sharpening a Schrade drop point

I have a Schrade drop point and a skinner. They both are tough to sharpen and always have been. I use Arkansas whet stones (Hard and soft) and then use a strop with Yellowstone. I can get most knives very sharp with these items but the Schrade knives dont seem to do much. My Buck knife gets scary sharp as do my Browning and Walther folderrs.

I use a 22 degree angle (freehand) on the stones and strop the knives flat. Is there a trick to getting them sharp or do I just need to switch to some different sharpening gear?

Are the Schrade knifes made of inferior metal or is it just tough to sharpen?

Try dropping the angle to around 15deg that might help. you should also be matching your sharpening angle when you strop.

I've had Schrades that were hard to sharpen as well.I'd still rebevel using a coarse stone and work thru to the finer grits.DM

I sharpen my Schrades to 20 deg, and they all get hair shaving sharp, I don't think you need to go down to 15...

15 to 20 degrees is sort of "splitting hairs" to me. I don't hone mechanically so I have to estimate the angle. I can keep it pretty consistent with the wedge I use to compare, but it is not exact.

I did cut down the angle a bit though on the coarse stone. It worked great and the knife is razor sharp now. If I had to guess I am somewhere between 15 and 20 degrees.

Thanks
