I'm very new to this, and I'm having trouble getting the tip sharp on a BM 943 154CM and S30V, both of which have slightly chipped tips. Can anyone provide advice on tip sharpening techniques using a Sharpmaker only (it's the only equipment I have).

Thanks all.

Knife tips can be problems on a Sharpmaker. It is easy to round them over and destroy their pointiness. The usual advice is to reduce the amount of pressure bearing against the SM rods as you sharpen the tip area of the blade.

Another technique I've found helpful (but certainly not a "be all and end all" for tip work on a SM) is to rotate the blade down as the tip area becomes the point of contact on the SM rods. A complete rotation would have the knife pointing virtually straight down as I get to the very end of the point.

You might also want to ask this question in The Toolshead forum here on BFC, if one of the moderators doesn't move this thread there for you. The Toolshed is dedicated to questions/discussions of knife maintenance and sharpeing.

HTH.
