So I have no experience with sharpening of any kind and my ZT 0301 is getting dull. Does anyone have experience with the spyderco sharpmaker and if so how does it handle S30V? Or a recurve style blade? Thanks for the help y'all.

In my experience, the ZT 3XX's grind is a bit thick and the edge angles may be over 40° inclusive. If you have an edge angle over 40°, the sharpmaker(at the 40° setting) will just be hitting the shoulders. if you're lucky to have an edge angle of exactly 40° or less, then you won't have a problem(the corners of the rods will handle recurves easily).

You'll probably have to rebevel if you use a sharpmaker to keep 'em sharp.

Black out the edge of the knife with sharpie so you can see where you are hitting on the stone. Then adjust the angle you are holding the blade until you are getting the blade apex, and not just the shoulder. Go slow, don't push it. The stones will do the work, you don't need to put pressure on them. Do a search on youtube. Once you get it, it's fun to do. Good luck.

Sharpmaker is perfect for recurve btw. If you really have no idea what you're doing, screw up a cheap knife till you feel better about it.

My Sharpmaker wasn't cutting it with my 0300 because I didn't want to remove a bunch of my blade trying to get a new knife back to sharp. I went to paperwheels but this was all personal to what worked for me. I believe you could do the sharpie method and could make the blade have the angles you want, but I'm just too impatient for that. If you need some help shoot me an email. Round stones help too by the way.

If I were to use the 30 degree setting on the sharpmaker to back off the secondary edge and then go back to the 40 degree setting would that help me make a finer edge? Sort of like a microbevel I guess.

Try the sharpie trick first so you'll see where you are hitting. If you aren't hitting the edge with the 40° setting, you won't be getting anywhere with the 30° setting.
