(Yes, another sharpening thread. Yes, I've done a search. Yes, I've read the sharpening threads. I want to know what the people in THIS forum have to say.)

I consider myself just an average sharpener. People I know think I'm awesome but they are just ignorant of a what a sharpened knife should be.

So, I'm looking to improve my skills. I came across a video of Ray Mears using various grit water stones. I've never used waterstones (whetstones, rods, DMT sharpeners, etc, yes, but not waterstones) but they seemed to be something I'd be interested in.

Have you guys used them? What recommendations do you have? Brand, vendor, etc.

Currently, I use a DMT block sharpener (blue) and then move into steel and ceramic rods after that. I can get it shaving sharp most of the time, although some angles seem to give me more trouble than others.

thanks, guys.

I, like you, am average...but my friends think I'm the man...and all I use is an Arkansas soft or a cheap set of Lansky croc sticks. I'll be getting more in to stropping as soon as my most recent order comes in. Most guys say that stropping is what puts you over the top for real sharpness. Try it out.

I bought a sharpmaker and it took a bit to get used to but my blades including stainless are coming out absolutely sick now. still having a bit of trouble with it when i need to remove a fair amount of material but I just try and not let anything get dull or damaged. thinking of an apex4 for home and using the spyderco for field or quick t/us. i bought mine from a local knifeshop for about $100
