Sharpening an old CS Tanto

I'm hoping you all can help me with this as well.

I have a 20 yr old Tanto and have never had luck sharpening it (it held a good edge for 5 years). Why are these so hard to sharpen and how can I get an edge back on it (I don't want to ship it to Cal since it is a veteran and I have quite an attachment to it).

Thanks to all for the help.

The problem I had with mine (about the same age as yours) was simply that the edge got too thick to cut well. Mine currently runs from 0.042" at the choil to 0.075" near the tip. The only way I know to fix mine would be a total regrind to thin the edge, so I retired it years ago.

The edge on mine will still shave hair off my arm, but it cuts cardbord like a hammer.

If you plan on using it, it may be a good idea to send it to any of the willing people on this forum like Tom Krein. He can reprofile the knife and put an excelent edge on it.

You probably need to reprofile the edge angles so that you can hand-sharpen it easier. Either take the time to do this slowly yourself, or pay someone to do this for you.

(I don't want to ship it to Cal since it is a veteran and I have quite an attachment to it).
???

You have a knife that hasn't been sharp for 15 years and you have detachment issues with it? Don't understand.
