So ive had an RC-6 for about 6 months. i love it and it holds an edge really well, but im not the best at sharpening and im thinking about buying the spyderco sharpmaker. Is it worth it? and what degree do u set the stones at for an
RC-6 and what for an Izula? thanks

i like the spyderco sharpmaker, the angle the rods are set at work fine for all the esee knives.

take it easy

I held off on the Sharpmaker for a long time, but finally got one. It's one of the better Sharpening systems I've come across ,with consistent results. It's not the system for taking a lot of metal off though ( large amount of re-profiling etc.) ,but it does give wicked sharp edges with not a lot of experience required.
Ive used it on every size knife with great results.

thanks, im pretty young so i don't have a lot of money, and i've held off of the spyderco for quite a while and i think im gona go for it

Its a great system, you will probably learn to freehand when using the SM. At least i did.
If your funds allow for it, get the ultra fine rod. You can achieve hair whitling sharpness with that.

The Spyderco double stuff is also great. same grits as the Sharpmaker, and you can use the leather pouch as a strop. I have had good results with the RC-6 on Sharpmaker but after a time I decided that freehand was better. Doing anything much bigger then the 6 on the Sharpmaker does not work so well (for me).

Good sharpening system. It always does get your knife sharper then when you started. I've since reverted to convexing by mousepad sandpaper. But I still like using the sharpmaker sometimes to put a micro-bevel on there just to get that hair shaving edge. BTW - my ESEE-6 is fully convexed and coating removed know...I like it that way!

Where the sharpmaker has a difficult time is when you are trying to change the bevel angle. Then you are in for a load of work. Also, be careful of the knife tip as it is easy to round off your tip especially when you are using the corners during sharpening.

See below sorry! Wasn't sure how to delete this one entirely!

How bout the dmt aligner system? Recently purchased with my esee-6 and have had good success on very dull kitchen knives so far - sharpmaker or lansky croc sticks next on list for quick touch ups. Btw esee-6 rocks! Haven't had chance to post my thoughts yet but will soon!

PS - this may have double posted on another thread but not sure cell phone is being funny and not loading pages well right now so apologies in advance if so!

Hey McCarthy. I kinda come from the old school of edge making. I'm not a gaget fan (though some work but alot of $$$ for a simple edge) I've been using a Norton stone for over 30 years. All of their sizes now. And when I forged 1095 steel, the stones put shaver edges on all of them. And they are as simple as can be to pack up and take with you. Only one peice. I'm close to finally having to put an edge on my 6 (Man they hold an edge for a LONG time) and my 6 will go right back to shaving in about 30 secs. No fuss no muss. I just enjoy simple and easy for me. (One of my knifes was even put in a story in blade magazine as the buyer of my 1095 blade had to let his 2 other buddys use my knife to finish off their deers. Mine did all 3 of them). Thats a good edge. What ever you get? Have fun with your 6.! I'm nuts about mine. edjoy edgy

I have the sharpmaker and it acts more like a sharpening steel removing so little metal but it cleans up the edge. I Bought DMT benchstones and there is no comparison, a super sharp edge in a few swipes and you can reprofile when the edge gets to thick in minutes. I also bought the diamond steels fine and extra fine for touch ups on a regular basis. If I was strapped for cash these diamond covered steels 600 grit and 1200 grit are amazing, puttting back a razor edge in a few swipes. I don't have to use my stones unless I really wreck my edge.

I have a Sharpmaker and have to say I'm really NOT a fan. It works OK, but I can get much better edges with a bit of 400 grit over a mousepad, then a simple loaded strop.
