Andy or Justin:

What is the proper angle to sharpen the primary edge of the Next Generation Ranger tomahawk? Usage is heavy -- chopping and throwing.

What is the proper angle for the lower sharpened hooking edge? I just want this one razor-sharp. Won't see much use.

I'm using an EdgePro Apex.

Thanks, guys.

kj4dx,

The primary cutting bevel is a 19 degree included angle, and our cutting edges are slightly more obtuse...probably 22 degrees.

Personally, I use a ceramic stick free hand and the 0-1 responds REALLY well. In most cases, I use it in a drawing motion, stropping the edge on the stick like on a piece of leather...I just hold the angle consistent.

Though the hook grind on yours was established free hand by Ranger Justin, the machined hooks will be a 45 degree angle, so they will indeed be difficult to get RAZOR sharp. As for the specific angle applied to your Next Gen hooking edge, I will default to Justin...it looked like it was around 30 degrees, just looking at it by eye. Your Edge Pro should do a fine job if you set it accordingly.

Enjoy!!!
