Sharpening and Banning Question

I was wondering if anyone knows of a professional knife sharpener that you can send your knife to who could give it a ridiculously sharp edge.

Also I saw on another thread something about "Banning" your knife with a convex edge, but couldn't find much info on it. Could anyone enlighten me about this "banning" process?

Thanks!

I have no idea about the Banning. But there are a bunch of member here that sharpen for others and could give a decent deal. I would search around here in the makers group.

Ban is a knife maker here on the forum. I believe his name is Ban Tang.
He does mods on knives and makes his own knives as well.

Thus, when he mods a knife it is Banned or Banized, etc

There are lots of makers here who can sharpen for you. You can also learn to do a convex edge by hand.

search for username "ban". his name is ban tang, real good guy.

others who do sharpening are tom krien and richard j.

you can achieve the same effect by reducing the thickness of metal directly behind the edge, and convexing the entire thing into the main grind. Then put to a high polish, and you've got a very, very sharp edge - HOWEVER, potentially an edge not covered by warranty.

when you reduce the thickness of the metal behind the edge by 1/2 or more - the knife you now have hasn't been tested by busse combat to be able to maintain itself under shock and stress. design wise, it's no longer the knife busse made, and work wise, they didn't do the grinding, sanding and polishing, so they can't be expected to guarantee that the heat treat is still good.

if you do something as dramatic as the ban style sharpening and the blade breaks, you can still send it in, but do so with the understanding that it might get turned down for warranty, cause it is a pretty extreme mod and changes most of the structural stability of the blade itself.

If you want it Banned, well, send it to Ban, but he's real busy and not very good about returning emails/PMs. J. Horton can put a mean convex edge on it and even beadblast the blade, which is cool. I'm sure he can do other stuff too, but he's a busy knifemaker so you'll need to ask and work out an acceptable payment. Both those options cost more than a simple sharpening. For that, send your knives to Tom Krein or to Richard J. Both have a good track record putting screaming edges on any knife.

If you just want sharpening, Richard is probably the man. If you want other custom work, or a fully-convexed blade, then definitely check Ban or Horton'sKnives...if you want a complete regrind, check out Tom Krein, the grindmonkey. I have owned a Banned blade and it was awesome. Jeremy's work is fantastic as well. TK isn't called the grindmonkey for nothing. While I've not had a knife sharpened by Richard, I have spoken with him before and he's a gentleman.

Good luck.

Hey Psych,
If ya live mid country or to the east send it to Horton, he is in TN, and if you west send it to Ban. Jeremy Horton and do some unreal work as Ban the man can. Just show pics when your done!!!

OH! LMAO! Boy, now I feel stupid! lol

Thanks!

Ban hasn't posted here in a while, so it's not surprising that you didn't realize that we were referring to an actual person. If you search, you will find threads with pics of Banned blades.

If you have the primary bevel behind the edge thinned dramatically, then there might be a slight chance of blowing out or or chipping the edge. As Jerry just posted recently in another thread, then in that case, the warranty on the edge would not apply. But if the handle slabs loosen with use, that would still be covered under warranty.

That said, you do not have to thin the edge to get it sharp. It's not hard to sharpen it yourself,, with traditional stones, devices like the Sharpmaker or Edge Pro, or convexing with sandpaper and leather strop.

I have had 10 or so, banned blades, 3 shbm's, 2 FBMs, a public defender, hell razor, a fully polished ak, I learned to convex from Ban, and a lot of practice, and some very nice equipment,, he is not really taking any Mod work, I spoke to him Friday, our styles vary some, he takes his edges thinner and the tips a lot thinner than I do, but, like I said, I have wooped the dog mess out of all of them,, and have yet to experience any Infi edge damage,, but to each is own...

Hey thanks everyone for answering all my questions and more! This is a GREAT forum. You guys rock!:thumbup::thumbup:

Edge Pro. :D

Not professional but dummy safe (hence why I use it ;) ) and allows you to sharpen your own knives crazy sharp.
