Sharpening Angle.

I've been playing around with my Lansky sharpening system, and I think that I will be able to use it to sharpen my 18" Khukuri.
However, I am not sure what angle I should use. 30 degrees or 25. Any suggestions?

For small knives that are used for light work the sharpening angle can make a huge difference as the edge is the only part of the blade that is actually heavily stressed. However when you are ramming a khukuri about 1" into a piece of wood the edge bevel angle is not as critical. I would be surprised if you could see a significant performance difference if you put a 25 / 30 degree bevel along the edge of your khukuri.

I would start with the 30 degree bevel as it will require less work to finish and leave the edge more durable. If you start to notice that the edge is not cutting as well then switch to the 25 degree bevel. If this is not as durable as you would want (which is not overly likely), then cut a 25 degree bevel and microbevel a 30 degree one on top of that, roughly simulating a convex bevel.

With a big knife (especially a khukuri) the angles on the Lansky guide are much lower than what it says they are. The distance between the sharpened edge and the guide is much bigger than what Lansky expects. I have not measured it by the 30 degree on the guide is likely to more like 17-22 degree when it is attached to an Ang Khola.

I would start with the 30 degrees and see how it works out. If cutting performance is still not good enough I would change to 25 degrees (course stone) and remove the burr with 30 degree (fine stone). See the sharpening FAQ or khukuri FAQ for removing the burr and bevels. Also, move the guide after sharpening say every 6" of the khukuri. As the stone gets further away from the guide the contact angle will be less.

The Lansky stones are great for free hand sharpening the khukuri. I hold the khukuri down on table and use the stones as a file. I start with the course (red) and finish with the white (ultra fine). Once you get use to it I think you will like this method as it removes a lot less metal (the angle is really 25-30 degree). Now I prefer the Spyderco ceramic stones for this simply to reduce mess.
