sharpening angle

This may have come up before, but my searches haven't yielded anything, so...

Two questions:

1. Is it still the case that Spyderco ships all their factory blades sharpened at what they call 30 degrees (i.e. 15 degrees per side)? I have a Sharpmaker and the video, and although I haven't watched the video for about a year, I seem to recall pretty clearly that Sal said they ship blades sharpened at 30 degrees (even though he recommended *typically* resharpening at 40 degrees).

So, still at 30 degrees shipped? Paramilitary in particular.. :)

2. When a blade is sent back to Spyderco for them to resharpen, do they resharpen at 30 degrees? I would think so, but...?

I ask because I'm thinking that if they RE-sharpen at 30 degrees, maybe I could just do my own sharpening at 40 degrees, then send it back to them once a year (more or less) to get the back bevel (and the rest of the blade) down to 30 degrees. Less time on the sharpener, and not expensive to ship once per year...

There is variation - not all blades are ground at the same angle. They aren't even all ground at either 30 or 40 degrees to match the Sharpmaker angles. The grinding of the edges is done by hand so some variation results. However, if I remember correctly, there was once a post where Sal indicated that there were variations between models, perhaps depending upon intended use. (Just try to find a specific post by Sal on this Forum  )

Edited to add:

I found the post by Sal on Spyderco.com Forum in reference to the Starmate.

Factory angle is usually between 30 degrees and 38 degrees inclusive. Earlier models were thinner than later models.

Very helpful - thanks! I'll stick to the 40 degree side from now on (mostly, anyway)...

The ones that I have seen varied between 15 and 17 per side. The SE are different. I don't recall, but overall more acute. The post was on the spyderco forum. If you really want to know I can probably dig out the post.

I just posted a similar msg on the general forum.

Finally got a chance to work on this tonight. Started with the diamond rods in the 40 degree slots (hadn't used them much until now), then grey, then white. In short order (5 mins or so), the Para now slices paper and shaves.

My concerns about sharpening S30V are now considerably less. THanks for all the good advice! :)
