Sharpening angles on the BM710HS?

All Factory Spyderco are 30 degress

All factory Benchmades are 40 degres

1. Benchmade does not generally set an single angle on every knife.

2. I have a couple of Benchmades and just the 806D2 came with a 40° angle. Every other was at 30°.

Expect the 710HS to have a 40°.

I just saw one more closly and the edge looked thick.

If you do a search you find, that many users do set the bevel back.

Mine came with almost exactly 40 degree - I checked it with my Spyderco Sharpmaker ;)

It was OK, but I'm changing it now to 30.

My BM 710HS came with an angle of less than 20 degrees on one side, and more than 20 on the other. So, on one side the 40 degree setting on the Sharpmaker did not reach the edge. I reprofiled it to 30 degrees inclusive, then finished with a few strokes on the white rods at the 40 degree setting.

I may reprofile it again and leave it at 30 inclusive to see how it holds up.

Definately a 40 degree angle. Go for 40. Good luck with that ****in recurve.

I handled the recurve by just slightly tilting the stone. It's pretty rough on the course stones (EdgePro) because the edge of the stone is rougher than the flat, but if you keep the motion consistent it works alright. The finer stones aren't much trouble at all. Just be careful.

As far as the original edge, that was a year and a half ago, so my memory isn't quite clear, but I think I also had a rather steep edge, with uneven grinds (mostly uneven at the tip). I'm pretty sure the original edge was more than 40° on mine. I've since reprofiled it at a lower angle, and boy was that fun.

I believe Spydercos come with 40 degree edges.
All of the ones I have seen (over a dozen) have been ~30, with most of them under by a few degrees. 20 degrees is really obtuse, you only need that for heavy bone or metal cutting.

I say that because the Sharpmaker guide recommends using the 40 degree setting for normal use.
