Sharpening big convex knives?

Hey -

I've got a dozen or so convex blades, the longest being 4-1/2." Plenty of experience sharpening them.

But - I'm looking at purchasing a big knife/mini-machete with a 11" convex blade (Condor Pack Golok), and I'm thinking that the strop and sandpaper I currently use for my other knives might be on the small size for a blade like this. I suppose I can still make it work with what I have, but it seems like there is probably something better I'm not thinking of here.

Any tips for sharpening bigger convex blades?

A good place to look for an answer is on the Himalayan Imports forum since all of their knives are convexed. What I use on mine is a rubber eraser with emery paper on it and that seems to work fairly well.

Cool. Thx.

The Work Sharp that Mike Sastre recommended is excellent for convexing. I use it along with a 1x30 and 1x42 belt sander in addition to strops & wet/dry sandpaper. I recommend that you explore the Maintenance, Tinkering and Embellishment section of the forum as there are many discussions on convex sharpening and the various methods and techniques involved that you would probably find useful.

Slack belt systems make sharpening big convex knives a breeze.
