Sharpening big knives

I'm planning on getting a Becker BK-9 shortly with a Christmas gift of an Amazon card. I currently have the smiths tri-hone system with 6 inch stones. Not sure if the thing is junk or not, but it gets the job done for me and I like it. I have never sharpened anything over 7 inches on it, however, and I am looking for a somewhat cost efficient means of sharpening the 9 inch blade I hope to soon have (that is, assuming I can't sharpen a 9" blade on a 6" stone). I like stones, so if there's a reasonable option like a set of 2 or 3 different grits that are long enough for the blade, I think I'd enjoy that. I've also looked into the worksharp but considering I can use a stone for all my other blades, I feel like it may be a waste.

Thanks in advance.

Just sharpen it in overlapping sections. I used to feel I needed the larger surface to do larger tools but after I got into using machete for backpacking I realized I could do 'em on regular sized bench stones - didn't need 16" surfaces. Its much easier than you might think, practice on a cheap kitchen knife first.

Glad this topic came up. My brother in law got me a 14" Old Hickory butcher's knife for Christmas (the look on my mother in laws face was pricless:eek:). Needs some sharpening.

thanks,

Ric

It can be done as HH suggests. As I've done it. But a Norton JUM-3 is a pleasure to own and use for large knives. Or the IM-313. DM
