I am very new to this knife business. So I am wondering why you sharpen knives pushing the blade on the stone instead of pullint it on the stone????

Thanks for the help

It removes large burrs faster. I also find it easier to maintain the correct angle and exert more force on the blade.

Judge_Blackhawk; welcome to BFC! I believe you will find it a friendly and informative place. One with many features that are easily overlooked.

For example, go to the Blade Forums dot com site, if this is not your bookmarked page, by simply clicking on the BFC logo in the upper right of any page. There, you will find a sort of 'site map' on the left border. One place is called 'knowledge base;' click on this, and you will find a number of articles written by moderators of BFC, including the excellent sharpening FAQ's by our own irrepresible Joe Talmadge. This will answer a lot of questions, and give you sound, practical, step-by-step instructions in how to sharpen, strop and steel an edge to perfection.

One other valuable resource is our search function. Just click on 'search,' (just under the 'post a reply' area), and then enter the subject for which you wish to search.

Doing a search for 'sharpening' I found over 100 different threads; a wealth of information is contained in these.

Good luck, and have a good time here.

As you hone the blade the thin edge flexes away from the stone and tends to build up a soft wispy burr resembling aluminum foil. This happens less when you stroke edge-first.

When I do my rough sharpening I don't worry about direction until I have most of the material removed. Then I start stroking edge forward to finish the contouring. Then I elevate the edge a little and strop lightly edge-first to remove the burr. There is generally a little bit of material that folds over when you hone edge first. I do a little stropping edge-trailing on the stone to straighten out or remove that material. Then a few very light edge first strokes to get a clean edge.
