Can anyone recommend any decent sharpening books and DVDs? I'm new to serious sharpening (mostly just used pocket tools and minor whetstone work until now), and want to start studying.

Before buying anything I would recommend you to read all the stickies on this subforum and to do some searching on the forums as a book, and search freehand sharpening on the famous video site, there's a lot of information out there, and best of all really updated with all kinds of steels sharpening gear and tecniques

I have all the books, and I haven't found any of them to be useful. I would recommend Joe Talmadge and Chad Ward's treatises on sharpening, which you can read online here:

You can also read these sharpening guides by knifenut1013:

I have a few threads which I can highly recommend, as well :D :D :D In the first one, please read post #9 by HeavyHanded; it is extremely instructive. In the OP in that same thread, there are some great videos, including one of Rick Marchand sharpening a knife with water stones which is highly instructive:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1014274-What-is-sharpening-a-knife-about

The information in the above is all free, all online, and will give you more information in a very accessible way that is far, far superior to any book currently on the market (I know because I've read them).

As for DVDs, the only ones I would recommend would be the two Murray Carter DVDs, "Blade Sharpening Fundamentals" and "Advanced Blade Sharpening Techniques," which you should definitely buy and watch over and over again. Watch all of knifenut's sharpening videos (His YouTube handle is MrEdgy81) and consider CrimsonTideShooter's videos as well (YouTube handle JDavis882).

If you read and watch all of those once through and then get your own stone and start sharpening, referring back to the above materials as needed and then finally watching/reading them all through once again after you've sharpened a dozen knives or so, I guarantee you that you will be as prepared and schooled as is humanely possible, short of one-on-one training by a pro. And you can always come back here to the MT&E forum to ask questions if you hit any roadblocks.

Sincerely,

Mag

According to Murray Carter, who's sharpening DVD's I would highly recommend by the way, sharpening is "99% skill, and 1% the tools".

I saw the title of the thread and wondered why you would need a sharp book or dvd...
