Sharpening Buck Drop Point Blades

I won this 501 and 503 earlier this week and received them yesterday. My plan all along was to send them to Buck for new blades and a cleaning. I originally thought that the tips of the blades had been broken and the owner ground a new tip for the blades. When examining the knives, it doesn’t look like they are missing any length though. The seller didn’t know anything about their past history. In looking at other auctions, there are several other Buck drop point blades on 501s and 503s that have similar blade profiles. Is there a reason people are grinding down their blades or does years of proper or improper sharpening lead to this blade profile?

I see this often with folks who think a bench grinder is the proper way to sharpen a knife. using a stone and hand sharpening over a lifetime wouldn't lead to this much removal of steel. thats from using power tools.

its a lack of knowledge on proper sharpening.

They both look identical to me which leads me to believe that blade shape was the desired outcome. I kind of like the look but not on my knife. I don't think it was "broke" and needed fixed. I like the standard shapes on Buck knives.
Just my 2 cents mind you. :)

maybe.......but seller maybe might have cleaned them up a bit in shape for his/her auction. to drive better higher bids....

see this a lot also......

As for the knife blades, hopefully whoever reshaped them didn't get them too hot, and ruin the heat treating.
The knives left yesterday for a hopefully short vacation to Post Falls, Idaho where they will receive new blades. I am not sure if the grinding ruined the heat treatment, but neither blade was very sharp. I promise that the new blades will never be treated that way.

My father did that to a set of nice steak knives that I bought him many years ago. I figure that he applied too much force while pulling them through the cheap sharpener he used.

The belly has been sharpened away. It can definitely be done by hand especially on a coarse stone, or a carbide pull thru.

Its from sharpening the entire blade in one slicing motion.

The blade at the Ricasso is barely on the stone an instant. The further you get from the Ricasso the longer the blade is on the stone.

Then as you travel down the blade and get to the belly, the contact patch gets smaller so more material is removed.

Then the tip gets rounded at the end of the stroke. Its actually 3 different problems all blended together.

Still nice knives ready for new blades, and a lifetime of service.

I just wanted to provide an update on these knives. I shipped them to Buck on August 26. Buck notified me on September 15 that they received the knives. I had new blades put on the knives and the SPA cleaning service. I received the knives back on October 29, so a little over two months after shipping them off for service. I am impressed with the new blades and how Buck was able to clean them up. The bolsters had plenty of scratches and small pits, but they are nice and shiny now. I would highly recommend the Buck new blade service.

Thank you. Buck's SPA and repair is excellent, enjoy those knives.
They just received 3 of my knifes on monday. 2 for blades, one for factory sharpening. Haven't heard from them yet... glad I found this post...

They are busy this time of the year. Don't get overly anxious or worry. There have been times I haven't heard from them until they ship them back.
oof... they got them on halloween and I havent heard BOO! Trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and put off a phone call, but im getting antsy in the pantsy.

When I talked with a person at the repair end they let me know that they do not confirm receipt of the knives sent in because the don't open them until they are ready to work on them. At that point they don't want the knife and paperwork seperated.

That is why you get notification after the work is complete and ready to go.

My 500 was 5 months for repair.
