Hello Folks,

I am preparing to sharpen a 503 Prince on the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Would you recommend the 30 degree angle or the 40 degree angle. The knife has not been sharpened before (except for factory sharpening). Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I think you know how to draw a line on the bevel with a Sharpie. The make a few passes with your stone in different angle settings to see which one matches the closest. DM

I use the 30* exclusively. It may take quite a while to get the blade to conform to the 30*, but once you do, you'll not be able to get a sharper edge faster with anything else. At least that's my experience, YMMV.

I don't use the SM that much any more but when I do I use the 30*. All of my Bucks I've tried it on take it well!

I usually set the main bevel at 30 degree inclusive then run a micro bevel at 40 degrees inclusive. All I have to do then is just touchup the micro bevel from time to time. This is using my Sharpmaker.

This is my approach as well, so long as the steel is in the 58 Rc range, as Bucks 420HC is.

For steels in the Rc 56 or lower range, including Case Tru-Sharp 420HC, Opinel Carbon and Bucks 420J2, I use a larger angle (40/50) to prevent edge rolling.
