Sharpening Busse

Once, a while back I posted re the Busse 5 and 3 (coming from a confirmed Strider fan) and got good feedback so went shopping. I have found both models at a local SE Asian Store and the fit, balance and tests are all as advertised. The only thing that worries me is the asymetrical grind and resharpening. I use the 204 at home but at work re-sharpen free hand with DMT Diafolds. Being partially edge challenged (am getting better) I am worried that trying to sharpen a Busse with two different angles may be too much of a challenenge for me and might be better off forgeting the whole thing. The Busse 3 would defininatley get a LOT of offshore, salt environment use, from cutting rope, wood, wire, thick rubber, chopping, etc. which from listening in this forum, the Busse would handle with little problem. Still it will sooner or later get dull, and due to baggage weight limitiations can not carry the full 204 kit with DMT stones so must use only the Diafold medium/fine. Am I going to be able to resharpen this style of grind without too much drama? Do some of you reprofile so the the grinds are the same ie 20deg are such? I have been told that it is the fact that the grinds are different that lends such keen cutting ability to the Busse edge.
Am just on the edge of falling under the Busse influence, but it is this last niggling problem that is stopping me from buying both knives.
Any help/comments?
Tks in advance

Some folks reprofile the Busse asymetrical edge to a regular flat edge on both sides and report that it not only works well, but is still a superior knife due to the properties of INFI.

What the asymetrical grind buys you is more strength immediately behind the edge for chopping due to the shoulder of the convex ground side, while still enabling ease of sharpening by needing to only strop the flat side of the grind on a ceramic rod.

FWIW, I use a Sharpmaker on my Busses and they get real sharp with it. I understand that eventually I'll remove enough metal to create a regular double flat ground edge. At a microscopic level right at the edge I'm sure I already have.

Your Diafold med/fine should serve well as a field hone for a Busse. You can use it like a ceramic rod to strop away the flat side of the edge grind to resharpen the edge.

I field maintain my BM by stropping (not pushing into as is normal procedure) gently with a coarse DMT stone. For some reason this puts a great edge on it. Now, obviously if you have big chunks of blade folded over or missing this won't work well, but for everyday "keeping it sharp" I found this works quite well.

Barry,
First off, welcome to the Busse Forum. :D:D

Don't be concerned about sharpening INFI with the Assymetrical Grind. I have trouble sharpening a pencil, but I'm able to sharpen my Busse Knives without much trouble. ;) I use a Ceramic Rod on the Flat side and then a leather strop to remove the burr.

Let us know what you decide.

I use a 204 to sharpen mine too. I really have no problems with it, but, as was said, after a long time, when the assymetrical edge is ground off, I plan to send it back to the shop for a re-sharpening.

BTW, welcome to the forum! It's cool to have someone from asia here (I'm sure there are others, but you're the only one I've seen posting). I've lived in Asia for much of my life, mostly in Indonesia and the Philippines. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you'll check in more often!

Sigh...obiously need better glasses. I never noticed that one side was convex. What you all's have said about treating it like a chisel grind makes perfect sense, and it being such a simple solution is probly why I didn't think of it myself. Also, is good to know that cermic will do the job also.

Andrew, do you use the 204 on both sides? 30 or 40 degree angle?
ps am mostly in the Asian forum.

Thanks for the feed back, will pick up one from Shears next time thru Singapore.
Now just need to find someone who makes a kydex sheath for the Busse 3 that can worn around the neck. No belts when wearing a Gumby suit in zero temps.

Welcome to the Wide World of Busse Knives, Rad-Barry!
If you wish a Great Kydex sheath for a neck-carry for your Busse Basic #3, contact eric Noeldechen at : ericn@mnsi.net
He's the "On-Scene Tactical Sheathing" guy, & does EXCELLENT work.
i've got a sheath from him for my #3, and SJ, and...
You will be happy with it!

Yes, I am currently using the 204 on both sides, at 30 degrees. It works very well, and I'm no sharpening genius.

Eric nailed it. Drag the flat side backwards on ceramic and strop the convex just to remove the burr. If you "charge" the leather strop with a very mild abrasive (ala Flitz) it wouldn't hurt.

Happy Hunting!

Welcome to the forum! :)

I've been sharpening my BM-E on a 204, and have had great results. Trust me, if I can do it ANYONE can do it :)
