Sharpening Busse

Hello,

I'm considering getting the Satin Jack, Steel Heart, or the BA. My only question is that I'm not exactly a great sharpener so I rely on my sharpmaker. I know that won't sharpen a standard Busse edge, but is there an edge I can have them put on it so the sharpmaker will sharpen the blade? Thanks.

Hiya Nick!!

Being lazy, I just ignore the asymetrical nature of the Busse edge and use the Sharpmaker as I do with other knives to good effect on Busse knives. Works okay for me. I usually only hone the edges to the level of using the corners of the white rods and skip using the flats of the white rods.

I realize that at some microscopic level I'm making the actual cutting edge of the blade a double-flat grind (vs Busse's "one flat & one convex" grind). Given the very small amount of metal removed by the Sharpmaker's rather fine ceramic rods in one of my typical sharpening sessions, I figure it will take about a hundred or more sharpenings before I make that double-flat grind big enough to care about, if even then. FWIW, even totally reprofiled to a double-flat grind, Busses are still "hell for tough" knives. If I find a burning need to have a true Busse edge put back on the knife, I can send it to the Busse shop and have them put a new Busse asymetrical edge on it for the cost of return shipping IIRC.

What's the main use you've got in mind for your Busse? The reason I ask is that the knives you've got listed (SH, SJ, BA) offer different capabilities that would be appropriate to some fairly distinct applications.

Be sure to use your Busse hard so it'll know you care about it. ;)

Welcome to the Busse Forum. Glad you stopped by.

One other option is to order the Busse you want with a symmetrical grind, then you can use the Sharpmaker without any problems. Just call the shop 419-923-6471

However, as Greg noted you can use the Sharpmaker on the regular edge also.

Let us know what you choose. :D:D

The shop will do a symetrical grind for you, but I suggest the Busee assymetrical edge. As long as you keep your edge keen (as you should with all knives) they are no more difficult to sharpen than other knives. In fact, I think they are easier, especially if you follow the instructions provided.

All the knives you mention are great choices but the Steel Heart is, IMO, the quintisential Busse knife.

Thank you for the replies. I will probably go with the symetrical edge to make things easier for me. I hate to say it, but the only way I sharpen my knives is on the sharpmaker. It does a good enough job for me. The main use for the knife will be an all around camp/backpacking knife. You know, just your average (average is not intended as a rating for Busse knives) blade to play in the outdoors with. I'm actually going to graduate from college in may, and want this to be my gift to myself for putting up with all the school work. It takes me a long time to decide what I want, and I believe it takes a long time to get the knives so I want to plan ahead. In the end, I want a Busse knife to be apart of my first camping trip next summer. :D So far though my favorite is the Satin Jack Combat Grade. I like the steel heart as well though. Oh well. THanks again,

Nick
