sharpening chisel ground blades

I have a Benchmade CQC-7 tanto folder. I believe the blade is a chisel ground, but I'm not sure what the difference is between all the "ginds". It basically is not a V type blade but is sharpened on only on one side. The only sharpener I have is the Lansky system but am not successful in getting it sharpened to the factory edge. I also tried the Spyderco ceramic rods but only succeeded in getting the cutting edge of the blade pushed over to the right. I need help! Any advice from you sharpening gurus? Thanks.

I wouldn't refer to myself as a sharpening guru but I do sharpen one chisel ground blade regulary. I have the Lansky set but don't use it for chisel ground blades. The Spyderco Triangle system works fine. I use between 3 and 20 strokes on the ground side to one pass on the flat side. I also employ a 10X jeweler's loupe to check my progress. Sometimes I use Spyderco ceramic "sticks" free hand, again following my progress with the 10x eyepiece. Stropping on leather finishes the job. Works fine for me. Get some magnification and just practice. If you are rolling the edge then the other side needs some attention. I find lightening the pressure of the stroke really helps after I see the edge angle about where I want it.

You can use the Lansky but only on the bevel side. Once you get a wire on the opposite side you just hit it almost flat on the medium stone very lightly just to remove the wire or if you have a strop, you may be able to strop off the wire. The wire of some steels are sometimes difficult to get off. My Benchmade CQC7 is razor sharp using the Lansky. The same can be done with a regular bench stone.

Does it have compoud bevels or is it just one long bevel?

Single bevels are realitivly easy to sharpen with bench hones, since there is more surface area to sharpen it pretty much is self aligning, just hold the knife and push across the stone like using a wood chisel. Just make sure you sharpen the main part of the blade separate from the tip.

hmm, I think the Benchmade has a normal v-grind at the edge, unlike the Emerson versions. Best you check again?

John, when you say "wire", do you mean like when the edge rolls over alittle? And how do you remove the wire? Do you move the stone in the same direction as when you're sharpening it?

I'm such a sharpening retard. I can't get it sharp. It's somewhere between dull and sharp. I couldn't get the Lansky " system" to work on this so I just put the knife on my table and ran the fine and ultra fine stones across the bevel side. Crap.
