sharpening convex edge?

I was going to say, with a convex sharpener, but Buzzbait's instructions are a little more serious. :D

A few Issues back Tactical Knives Magazine published a great "how to" article on this- tou should get your hands on it. I'm afraid I don't have it available for reference here but its worth finding.

The Author of the article advised mounting a mouse pad on a wood block, and overlaying various grits of sandpaper, and using a kind of stropping motion that would allow the blade to sink into the cushion of the mousepad, thereby making a natural convex surface grind. It was extremely easy, inexpensive, and well-written. I saved the article with the intent of trying it myself. If you can find the article I'd use this method.

Wish I could preovide more detail...

Here's a link that talks a little about using sandpaper....

You can substitute a mousepad for plate glass.
I've read that a mousepad can be too soft, and you'll 'roll the paper' over the edge... which can actually dull it. I used a 'sanding block' which has a little stiffer foam backing, and got excellent results. Keep the angle low, and don't push too hard.

Use a bench hone free hand. It's the easyest way. Don't try and hold any angle just don't lift the spine up very much and let her rock. You'll have a convexed edge in no time.

Awhile back someone here mentioned using a telephone book instead of a mousepad. I've been doing that and like it more.
