i gonna pick up a d2 steel blade knife soon and i was wondering if there are any "v" sharpeners that work particularly well on d2 (i use the v sharpeners because im not that great at sharpening with a stone). i already have a smith pocket pal mini sharpener and i'm assuming its not gonna do much to the d2. but i just wanted to confirm. thanks

The tungsten and ceramic are still harder than D2 knife blades, so they will cut it. You're not going to get a popping sharp edge from the pocket pal, but it will be serviceable.

You will want to invest in something like a SharpMaker from Spyderco (get the diamond rods too) or a kit like a Lansky/Gatco. They are easy to use, not too expensive, and you'll get razor edges from them, on any steel.

Then you can move up to stuff like paper wheels, belt sanders, Edge Pro, etc.

I hope you didn't order a Queen. They come dull as butter knives and no "V" sharpened will reprofile queen d2 no matter how long you work at it. Best to get a DMT sharpened of some sort.

dont use a pull through sharpener. they are the worst thing you can ever use on a knife.
you would be better off with a set of ceramic sticks or do it by hand with some wetordry sandpaper on glass plate.

cramsey3006 gave you a good suggestion to try the paper wheels. you can put an edge on d2 in a matter of minutes once you learn on some cheap knives how to sharpen. most people can get shaving sharp results right off the bat but i suggest you practice.

they are a lot easier than using stones and you can even sharpen scissors on them. i offer phone help if you have problems. check out the thread i started on them.

A.G. Russell sells a 'Field Sharpener', which is a V-crock type, and it comes with both diamond and ceramic rods. I bought one of these that I kept stored away for a long time before trying it out, and it surprised me. The diamond rods are pretty impressive on this one, they put a lot of bite into an edge quickly. Should handle the D2 pretty well. For general maintenance, this setup should do pretty nicely. I suppose the only downside might be, the rods are a bit short.

The Spyderco Sharpmaker also has (optional) diamond sleeves, which fit over the standard rods. They are fairly expensive though, adding further cost to the Sharpmaker Set.

If the need arises to completely rebevel a D2 blade, I'd recommend one of the guided setups for that, with diamond hones (Lansky, Gatco, EdgePro, Wicked Edge, DMT Aligner/Magna-Guide, etc.).

Get a DMT Aligner system and buy the extra-extra coarse 4" whetstone (WS4XX). The only way you can go faster is by using a powered system like a belt sander.
