Sharpening - Diamond Stones

I have a Sharpmaker and have used it with decent results in keeping my Centofante and black-blade Delica shaving-capable.

Of course, I'm not exactly outstanding at sharpening, and have yet to totally feel as proficient with it as I do other things. That said, I just checked out the price on a couple of diamond rods over at NG, and I was quite surprised. I realize that their main use is reprofiling (in which case, I'd probably have a hard time gauging exactly how far I'm off / how to do that), but if I were to get those stones at ~$62/pair, how much "faster" would the work be on a non-Spydie, non-30/40 degree blade?

ya can wrap emery cloth or sandpaper to the rods and accomplish much the same thing albeit much cheaper.

the diamond rods do work well though, just pretty high $$ imho.

When using sandpaper or emery cloth, does it plug up or wear out quickly? When I have used paper in the past for convex ground blades on a mouse pad, it seems that I had to change the sand paper quite often to keep it cutting. Thanks.
