Sharpening Edge Calculator

I do have a couple of questions. Is it best to measure the width at the handle and how does a distal taper effect all of this. Thanks.

Good questions Mark!

I updated the page with some more instructions and a picture.

Besure to measure the width of the blade right where the edge starts. The thickness is measured at the spine at the same point.

Distal taper doesn't matter as the coins are only there to get the stroke started.

I hope that helps.

Play around with the calculator. I was shocked at what a slight change in the starting position will make in the edge geometry. No wonder I have such a hard time using stones!!!

Steve,

That's a pretty nifty gizmo you've got there.

Time to open it up to the rest of bladeforums - post it in the Blade Discussion Forum.

You might consider changing the title of the page because you know folks are going to want to bookmark it. Instead of Sando Custom Knives, maybe something like "Edge Sharpening Calculator by Sando Custom Knives".

Oh, and I take exception to the part about a cleaver not shaving paper...

Very fat-beveled cleaver

:D :eek: :D

Dan,

LOL, I gotta kick out of your post. All your corrections are made. You should check for yourself ;) ;). And re-posted.

BTW I'm glad we're just cyber pals, your stuff redefines scarry sharp.

I nearly fell off my chair when I read it...;)

Steve - you really crack me up. I like your sense of humor. I'm glad I made the "pal" list, cyber or not...:D

Just for kicks, I put in one of my khukuris...

4 pennies, 4 dimes and 2 quarters

I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

I think you've really hit onto something great here...

Thanks Steve,
Reel Slick!!!
I teach culinary arts and am always looking for a better way to teach students how to sharpen each piece of cutlery to the function of the job.
Thanks Again!

Wow, that really is too cool...been thinking of making some jigs, now I can calculate the dimentions!

Steve that's very cool! There is no end to the amount of good stuff knife makers can do for each other. Now we're waiting for the "vertical platen" version... :D

I sharpen a lot of knives for friends and could use a reference like that to help people get started sharpening their own painlessly.
Much thanks

Here is some norwegian coin dimensions, I couldn't find one.

10kroner=.o79inches=2mm
1kroner=.066inches=1.69mm
50øre=.o67inches=1.72mm
20kroner=.087inches=2.23mm

Not sure which measurement you wanted so put both, will try to get 5kroner peice sometime this week. Cool system!

my "standard" edge is the spine lift being 2x the width. so a 1/8" knife is 1/4" off the stones. Ignores the thickness(belly-wise), but gets me about 15deg per side(30inclusive). I can go from that over to the 30settings on the spydie 204 and match close enough.

just set the thumb on the spine with enough clearance that it's not rubbing the stone and I go.
