i just bought my my first emerson. I got the cqc 15 and i need tips for sharpening the belly portion without rounding off the secondary point . And do emersons prefer a toothy edge or polished edge? Btw I free hand sharpen

Sharpen like any other knife. Toothy or polished edge is up to you. I like toothy myself.

Since you freehand sharpen, you might want to invest in one of the diamond rod sharpeners that Emerson sells. They're oval shaped so they fit well in the curved section of the recurved blades Emerson makes. The 15s are not as severely recurved as the Commander series, but it's still enough so that I didn't like using a flat stone when I sharpened mine. I did well with their diamond rod sharpener, however.

As far as toothy vs. polished, I always preferred my Emersons with a toothier edge. They just seemed to perform better on the material I was cutting back when I was carrying Emersons. I would sharpen with their diamond rod and then run both sides of the blade down the edge of a bare, hard leather strop a couple of times. That seemed to do it for me on my mini-15.

I used the edge of the diamond rod that I used for the rest of the knife. The edge of a Sharpmaker rod works well, too. The serrations don't actually need to be sharpened as often as the rest of the edge unless you use them a lot. At least, on mine they didn't. They worked well longer than the plain edge part of the blade because they were serrations, I guess.

If you have a hand-held strop you can probably do most of what the serrations and the PE part of the blade need just by stropping regularly. When I carried my Emerson I worked in a warehouse and cut zip ties, pallet strapping materials, and even thin computer wiring as well as the usual carton tape and styrofoam with my mini-15. About 90% of my edge maintenance was done with strops. I rarely had to do any serious sharpening with the diamond rod.
