Was considering investing in some idiot proof gear to help me maintain my fallkniven f-1 (and a couple others) I've seen alot of different kinds of stuff sharpmakers...ezlap diamond rods.. but after reading was thinking about mouse pads and sandpaper..Anythoughts?

If you are just maintaining an edge the Spyderco Sharpmaker is the easiest to use for me. If the blade is really dull and needs reprofiled than a Lansky is better. I myself reprofile with a double sided Norton India stone but i do it freehand. I used to use the Lansky when I was younger but got tired of strapping the thing on.

FYI for some of todays stainless steels you might want to invest in the diamond lansky stones instead of the natural ones. The natural ones could take forever to reprofile an edge. I don't have an F1 yet to comment on its steel.

Riley The diamond Lansky Kit's work very fast and will put a very sharp edge on a knife, but they are set up for knives with a beveled edge ,not convex like on the f1 or the bark river knives. If you wish to keep the factory profile on your fallkniven the mouse pad and sand paper might be your best option. I am learning this method now as I have a Bark River Gameskeeper on the way http://www.barkriverknives.com/convex.htm artical on convex sharpening

Mike pleas keep me posted on your developments..My f-1 is new also but so far I've been very happy with the factory edge
