Sharpening FFG vs. Hollow

Hopefully some of you experienced knife people can tell me if what I am noticing is in fact usually true. A FFG knife seems to be much easier to sharpen vs hollow ground? BTW I use the sharpmaker. Both knives are the same steel- vg10 It seems to me that for some reason, the ffg takes a razor edge pretty quick. The hollow ground blade on the other hand seems to take longer. Or--Is it just the person doing the sharpening?

Are both the edges profiled to match the angle of your stone? If only one is matched, the matched one will sharpen while the unmatched edge won't.

Otherwise, you're sharpening the same exact edge angle and there should be no difference regardless of the blade grind.

dimensions at the bevel just behind the edge may be different. i do'nt know how to measure this i do it by feel but knifenut1013 & knarfeng have the means to correctly measure the thickness of these areas. my flat grinds gecs are much thinner in this area then the queens & SPYDIES. in any case i prefer a flat grind over a sabre or hollow grind anyday.

are they from the same maker? is the rc hardness the same on both knives? you could be using more pressure on one compared to the other. there are many things to consider.

I am using a hollow ground spyderco dallara and delica ffg. I am not sure, but to me it seems like I have a better feel for the ffg when sliding it down the rods. The dallara doesnt really seem to be giving me that feel that steel is being removed.

The only difference I've noticed is that the FFG is harder to sharpen at an acute angle like 30º inclusive. Simply more metal to remove. I keep most of my knives at 40º, so I don't really see any difference in the grinds at that angle.

Try painting the edges with a Sharpie. Then do a dry pass with the stone and see how the edges and stone match up.
