This maybe old news to some but something I just found out about. Wayne Goddard was telling me he was sharpening files not to long ago. I thought he was pulling my leg but I asked how he was doing it. Pretty simple to do just by soaking them in ferric cholride and water solution. Tried it the other day and it works quite well. I've got about a 4 to 1 mix and let the file soak over night. This was an old file I bought at a second hand store for a buck that I was going to make a blade out of.

I used to do that with Birchwood Casey rust and blue remover. I just rubbed it on the file with a dauber. It works for awhile but in the long run, I believe it's better to have them professionaly done, especially specialty files like checkering types.
