The more I read on here the more I see beginners talking of struggling.. I am a beginner. I am new to sharpening I have only been sharpening for a month and started out just on a coarse dmt... there have been a few times in my life where I tried to learn to sharpen knives with my dads old stones and would read a little and watch YouTube but I never had any luck... I couldn't sharpen a knife to save my life and I couldn't even get the blade a little bit sharp.. this is not a thread for me to brag because I have nothing to brag about but more of a thread to inspire new sharpeners to not get down or feel like they can't do it and they just don't have what it takes.. I know that feeling I thought it my entire life.. the most important thing for a bigoted to do is keep a constant angle. How? Grab a couple or a few quarters (depending on size of knife, whatever gets u closest to something that looks me a twenty degree angle) and lay your spine of the knife on the each time u proceed to make a stroke. As long as u do this and u can keep your hand steady during the stroke all u have to do is repeat that until u raise a burr.. u can find out what it is and how to detect. One all over the Internet.. once you have one switch sides and repeat.. after u raise another burr u can knock it off by pulling your knife through a soft piece of wood or continue to a finer stone.. sharpening really is simple don't make it to complicated! Educate yourself and sharpening will become easier until the only thing u are lacking is experience. Anyone can make sharp edges just be patient. I'm here to help anyone but there's probably hundreds of more ppl who know more then me on here. Just wanted to share my story with anyone who has felt discouraged and I know there's quite a few on here! Good luck to u all.

Sorry I meant to include where I'm at now sharpening and got ahead of myself.. after trying sharpening again I was able to produce shaving sharp edges my first time trying sharpening again after all these years (not a great shaving edge but it shaved arm hair) dmt coarse stone leaves a good edge and the finer stone I have purchase me the better results got.. I still have a lot to learn but I thought it was crazy how all the times I tried to sharpen I never could then I try years down the road after learning a little bit about it and could produce a nice edge..

U can also fold paper to get a twenty two degree angle or use a mitre saw to get any angle u want and make a wedge. Anything u can use to consistently keep your knife at the same angle at the beginning of your stroke is a big help
