Is there a kit or system that is best for someone who is new to sharpening knives, like me? I'm not sure if I'm "doing it right" or if I'm just dulling my blades. I know know the difference between 440c and ATS - 8 or hollow ground or what. I just want my knnives to cut. I use mine for everyday minial tasks, if at all: cutting string, opening packages, etc. Right now I carry A CRTK Bear Claw.

Thanks for the help.

I would recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker 204. It comes with a detailed instruction book and even a video where Sal himself shows you how to sharpen just about anything.

Anyone with any level of skill can use the thing effectively. I can get knives shaving sharp on it.

Ditto that. It's the best system for quick touchups if you know how to freehand sharpen. If you are like me though and suck with your hands buy the additional diamond rods as well so you can use it to do even full resharpenings. :D (They cost an extra $50 though.. :footinmou )

Didn't work for me.

Other than that, agree on Sharpmaker.

You're just not going to find any serious knock against the Sharpmaker on this site, and believe me if there was a problem you'd find out about it here. Judging from your description of your current knife interest level, it is the perfect tool for you. But there's this much about it--if your interest grows over time, you will not "outgrow" the Sharpmaker. You might go on to master freehand sharpening with stones, or get a high-end device like the EdgePro, but you will always have a use for the Sharpmaker. You really can't miss with this tool.
