Sharpening Grit

After years of buying Spyderco's as gifts for family and friends I finally bought one for myself and love it. Its the plain edge Delica. Now that I've been using it everyday for a while its time to sharpen it. My question is what grit to use to duplicate the factory edge. I have a DMT 600 and 1200 grit hone. I tried both hones and don't think either one is close to the factory. The 600 seems to be a coarser edge than the factory and the 1200 seems too fine. (the 1200 will shave like a razor though) They both give sharp edges but not like the factory. What am I missing? Maybe starting with the 600 grit and going to a ceramic stick?

I don't know what Spyderco does at the factory, but have you tried finishing up on the white rods of the Sharpmaker? That will give you a shaving sharp edge that's still a teeny weenie bit grabby.

What color is the 600 grit DMT? The red DMT ("fine") gives a pretty agressive edge that works really well on rope, bread, and the Christmas ham. On a small knife like the Delica, I tend to prefer a more polished edge, and the white Sharpmaker rods are just about right for me.

Stop when you get to bone.

Leef - The factory edge is done with power equipment and very skilled workers. I would suggest tryng a 30 degree angle done with a sharpmaker using the corner of the white stone. It won't hold up as well as 40 degrees, but will be very sharp. IMO, Angle and consistency are more important than grit.
