Hey guys I'm somewhat new to sharpening but I understand the basics and what a micro bevel is. My question is I just got a lansky sharpening system and my plan is to sharpen a knife on the 17 degree setting (17 per side) then take it to the sharpmaker and put a micro bevel on at 40 degree setting, will this work? I originally wanted to sharpen at 20 per side - 40 inclusive but I don't know how I would put a micro bevel on it. Any suggestions or tips is appreciated!
Thanks

Yep, that will work. The micro bevel must be more obtuse than the main bevel.

So 17 degrees per side with a 20 degree per side micro bevel is doable.

If you sharpened at 20 per side for the edge bevel then your micro bevel would have to be like 25 degress per side (50 inclusive).

Ive measured the angles on my lansky clamp system. It seems to run a little lower than the markings indicate. My 17 is more like 15 degrees. 20 is around 18. 25 is around 22. 30 is Round 25-26. The 17 degree setting may be too shallow.

What knife are you sharpening?

The 17 should be ok, just try the 20 for your micro. That should leave enough meat behind the edge for stability while making the bevel a touch taller.
-This will help with slicing and still keep the cutting edge from chipping out.

If you do experience some minor chipping, resharpen at the 20 until your up the bevel 1/2 way (the old 17) and then do a 25 micro bevel.
-The major benefit you will see here is a slight affect comparable to a convex edge, but being a multifaceted version. This will stay this way until you end up sharpening out the old 17 dps bevel and you will then be left with the 20/25.

Lansky actual angle depends on the blade thickness and the amount the blade protrudes from the clamp, however on mine at any rate the range is around 13-15 degrees for the 17 degrees slot. I find the Lansky and Sharpmaker complement each other well. The more or less fiddly setup of the Lansky needs only be done occasionally, with regular sharpening carried out on the SM. I tend to prefer sharpening at 30 deg inclusive, so set the Lansky to form a bevel a little bit more acute.
