hey, just out of curiosity...what would be the best way to sharpen a balisong for effectiveness and without damaging the blade?

It depends on the blade style, but I would say sharpen a bali the same way you would sharpen any other knife

There is nothing specific about sharpening a balisong blade.

I won't claim that it's the best way since that quickly becomes a religious argument for some folks, but I will say that I use a Gatco Edgemate system and get very good results with it.

There is a nice FAQ on sharpening in the FAQ library here at bladeforums.com.

I use my sharpmaker 204 and it works fine. Balisongs are just another blade, not just another knife but just another blade.

Do or do not...there is no try.

I used to sharpen my knife every week with a finishing stone (ceramic) that came with my smith kit, but a friend told me that I can keep a razor sharp edge by using a steel rod (like chefs use-preferably a smooth one) or a strop for straight-razors, assuming the knife already has a good edge.
