Sharpening help

Hey all. I thought I'd learn how to freehand sharpen a knife and gave it a shot on my BM42. I thought I did a fair job on the straight edge but had some trouble controlling the angle on the curved portion of the blade. Do you guys generally sweep the blade along the curve as you sharpen, or do you concentrate on one area at a time?

I also managed to get a couple minor scratches. Any tips on removing them? They're very minor, but I'mm picky that way.
