Getting ready to try my hand at sharpening my convex edges. Some of my questions are:

1. How do you attach the sandpaper to the mouse pad-do you glue it or clamp it on?
2. How do you secure the mouse pad-do you attach it to a piece of wood or just lay it on a table?
3. Where do you find 1500 to 2000 grit paper-I have tried Lowes and Ace with no luck

Stropping-I have some extra tanned deer skin. Is it to soft to use?

Thanks,

Kirk

Bearing in mind that I used sandpaper and mousepads before I switched to a belt sander, I'll take a crack at this.

1. I never found clamps that worked well enough. I used 3M spray adhesive.

2. I just layed it down. If you'd rather bring the hone to the edge as some prefer, glue it to a piece of wood.

3. Auto parts store, or the auto parts section of a Wal-Mart. Check where they keep the Bondo and touch-up paint.

I don't know the first thing about deer skin. I use an old leather workbelt that came out of a DRMO dumpster for stropping everything but my straight razors. (They got their own proper leather strop, pampered things that they are.)

What he said:D

I used an old leather belt for quite some time to strop my blades. However, since getting into very crude leather working, I have all kinds of scraps that I load up for the task now. Have fun. Be careful. Good luck!:D:thumbup:

Instead of sandpaper and mouse pad, I went to Home Depot and got an assortment of sanding sponges.

They work GREAT!!!

You won't find ultra fine grades though. But if you're satisfied with a blade sharpened with 350-ish sandpaper, this is a great way to go.
