How do you sharpen a hollow ground blade? If I sharpen it on my sharpmaker won't it eventually make it a flat grind?

Just sharpen it the way the DVD shows you to that came with the Sharpmaker.

It would take a tremendous (rediculous) amount of sharpening with the Sharpmaker to get all the way up to the thicker material. It really should not be an issue.

I hope this helps answer your question.

a hollow grind is a type of blade grind. if you use your sharpmaker it will be a v grind on a hollow ground blade.

I just sharpen them like a flat or sabre ground, you should only be on the secondary bevel anyway, which is flat, the grind above should make no difference. However I do see your point, if you went far enough and had the skill you would actually end up with a concave grind.

One would think that by the time you wear it down to a flat grind, you won't have much blade left anyway.

I just sharpen mine the same as I do any other grind, since you're really only sharpening the secondary bevel.

Moved from W&SS to Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment, which is the proper forum for sharpening.

You'll only turn it into a flat-grind if you have it at such a steep angle that you're hitting the shoulder of the saber grind. You're not going to do that with the Sharpmaker unless you do it on purpose. And if you try it, it's going to take you years.

But by sharpening the bevels at the edge, you're not going to turn it into a flat-grind.

I dont think any knives come with a hollow ground edge, hollow grind is the profile of the blade not the edge itself
