Hi all, you probably get questions like this a lot sorry for any inconvenience/s. Any way I'm trying to sharpen my hunting knives to just field dress deer. Also I am going to free hand. I don't know the steel types they were gifts. My grandfather gave me an oil stone and a water stone so I do not know the grits. If y'all could help me out with what are good free hand stones or hones also I was thinking under 30 dollars if possible. Thank you

The Norton India would be my recommendation. It's in your price range and with a home made strop is capable of some very sharp edges.

I work in your area a bit, what city you in?

You can upload it to a hosting site (Flickr, Photobucket, etc.) and link them here. Check some non paying member post with pictures (I have some), do a reply with quote, you'll see the code needed to link them.

It looks to be a coarse/ fine India. It's been use a lot and will take some time to return it to flat but it's worth a try. I'm sure I'd work at it. Especially, with it being my Grandfather's. Good luck, DM

He also gave me an Oil stone I don't have at the time I'll have to use that to keep my blades sharp then make a strop
