Sharpening ideas ?

Had a little down time at work today and figured I'd try and make a hex hawk . I think it turned out pretty awesome but not sure %100 how I'm going to go about sharpening it.. it is just a chisel grind and some cheap 1018 so I'm not expecting a whole lot. But any tips/ideas on getting it to a actual using edge would be appreciated.

Maybe if you quench in superquench or at least iced salt water you might get enough hardness to sharpen effectively. Unless I'm misunderstanding, 1018 is likely to be very soft in its current state, though I do use mild steel for quick and dirty oneoff scrapers.

I got it cutting paper now by just using a small file. Still now we're near sharp tho. Thinking I'll just torch it and quench in some oil

You could try running it through a case hardening process, but there's only so hard you're going to be able to get 1018.
 
You'll probably need a fairly thick edge apex to stabilize the soft steel.
 
If it ain't sharp it might as well be good lookin! Put a mirror polish on the edge and going to get a acid/stonewash here in a little bit

Put a microbevel on it at a lifted angle and see if it stabilizes the edge. If it still rolls over, lift the angle some more.
 
Basically anything under roughly 1040 is going to be hard to get any appreciable hardness. But now you know how for the good steel. ;)
 
Quick update guys.. I did "heat treat" if you want to call it that haha. But the results were better then I thought it would be. No I did not get extreme hardness out of 1018. Never thought I would. But! I did gain some. And I just got done with my final sharpening steps and this lil bastard is screamin sharp! Shaves with ease and is way sharper then I ever hoped to get it . Hopefully it will keep at least a working edge for longer then 2 cuts once I start using it. Just wanted to give yall a update. Talk to ya later
