Guys, what are the best methods for sharpening knives with severe curves like a Karambit or an Emerson commander?

I'm thinking of a narrow hand held stone like a DMT, does anyone have a good method for keeping the grind neat?

Anyone else have some suggestions? I can see the Sharpmaker doing it but what about other systems or methods?

If you're not comfy with trying or not getting good results send it back to the company for sharpening maybe... Sorry I don't have any better suggestions or tips.

I've currently been sharpening a moderately curved karambit by stropping it on my leg while wearing some old blue jeans. The cross sectional diameter of my leg makes it easier to strop a karambit than a flat surface, though a leg may be too wide for significantly curved karambits like the EC unless your legs are fairly thin. Not certain since I don't own an EC karambit. If stropping on denim is too slow, try taping sand paper to your leg.

Smoky mountain knife works http://www.eknifeworks.com sells a large crock stick about 7/8" diameter about a foot long for about $6.00

You need to be careful not to let the tip of the blade drag over the stick at the end of your stroke or it will turn that razor sharp pointy tip round and not so sharp. Once you master that it works pretty good. And it's cheap too!

On a curve like that on a karambit, I'd find it much easier to freehand it with a simple ceramic crock stick rather than using a Sharpmaker, mostly because with 2 hands it's easier to move the stone around the curve.

Get Hewitt Jewel Stick. I bought one for sharpening curved blades and found that it works great on any blade, and it's big enough to sharpen a bowie on. It looks like a steel at first, but it is actually a 3 sided diamond hone (coarse, medium, fine). It is a fantastic sharpener!
