I want to get into sharpening..so I was wondering what your opinions are. I am quite familiar with KME`s kit...I sharpen my broadheads with KME stones.. Is the KME a good place to start?

It seems to be a decent system, but I think you would be happier just saving your money for a few months and getting an Edge-Pro Apex.

I have owned Sharpmaker, Edge Pro, Wicked Edge, WorkSharp Onion edition and the KME with the new gold series diamonds. IMO, the KME offers the best bang for your $ unless you plan on sharpening lots and lots of knives and/or you want acute angles below 17 dps.

I am with Ben. I am new to sharpening and I got the Edge Pro. In two days I have knives that are hair popping sharp.

Look up jdavis882 on youtube and take a look at his sharpening video's if you want to see someone try to break it down and sharpen. But if you want a pro to break it down for you look for some of Murray Carter's dvd's. Beyond that there are stickies on top of this sub-forum, a wealth of information if you use the search function, and I mean a LOT. Personally I prefer to use google and type in bladeforums after what I want so it look like this "How to sharpen bladeforums" and I click on the show more results from "bladeforums" or however their wording is. I seem to have better luck finding things that way.

Just know sharpening is very easy till you get really into it, than lets just say it can get very complicated very fast. It's one part art, one part mad science to create that perfect edge. You can ask 10 members how exactly they get that perfect hair whittling edge and I can promise you will get 10 different answers, but they all understand the concept behind what they are doing most likely. So they find out what works for them and they refine their technique and make it work. So don't get too hanged up on what people use to get their results or the specifics on their technique, this is one of those rare times we can all agree it's the end result that matter how you get there isn't important.

And lastly practice practice practice. This is a very hands on skill you need to practice it to get good at it.

If you want to sharpen fast and have steady hands, a Worksharp can give surprising edges. Considering that it uses 3 grits, the results from a steady hand and proficiency with the tool are amazing. I can't whittle the electrons off an atom, or split single celled organisms, but even RichardJ called two of my knives sharp! I would call that mission accomplished, and my knives don't need to be sharper.

The KME uses 1 x 4 stones. There are bigger rodeos than that in the world today. I own a KME, and I fault it on the small stones, among other things.

The Edge Pro has 50% more stone area. The Edge Pro can hold 2 x 6 stones, and that is several times the stone area of a KME. .

However, if you want to get er done, get a system where the stones go by the blade in belt motion, not fast enough to hurt the metal, but fast enough that you can do a 3 knives in 10 minutes. Ken Onion WorkSharp.
