Hello all, first of all yes, I do know how to sharpen a knife to hair popping sharp on stones. I do not have any of the latest gizmos either. However, I am having a hard time with my Mini Commander. Non serrated edge. I can get this knife sharp but not to a shaving degree. Is this due to the chisel grind and higher angle secondary bevel? Or am I missing something? I do have some shop chisels that will shave but the bevel is totally different on those. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have considered regrinding but want to ask first others opinions. Or please point me to the appropriate thread. Thanks.

the commander is kinda hard, but not impossible, have you checked out the emerson website for info?? also i have found on the commander a diamond rod (i dont remeber what brand mine is...EZlap maybe) works better than a flat stone, best bet try it like the EKI site says, and then polish the edge w/a ceramic (or similar) stone to get it razor sharp, all the while stropping it on either a strop or cardboard or a steel (i use a steel myself), works on mine anyway

Thanks Greg, I have been on the EKI site previously and have been aware of the wire edge roll-over since I was little and Dad showed me how to sharpen. (his were always scary sharp too!) I have also tried a diamond rod, Schrade brand. I have a straight razor collection and use a strop on my own too. Normally I don't have any trouble with getting blades sharp. I have tried diamond rods, small stones to work the recurve better, maybe the brand rod I have is not great? I have not tried ceramic rods, I'll give them a shot. It may just be me. I may need to spend more time on it than I have. I don't have any other chisel grind knives but this one. Your commander or chisel grind is shaving sharp, well there's hope for me too.

Have you considered a Sharpmaker. The triangle stones work very well on recurves. Also they are pretty nice to have for serrated edges.

well travis, let me tell ya, i messed up a CQC7 before i figured it out lol, had to send it back to EKI to get it sharpened, but after many trials and tribulations i have managed to get all my EKI's razor sharp, ie SOCFK tanto, CQC7 tanto, commander, spec war SP and CQC8, and i think the commander is the hardest due to the belly of the blade curving, hard for me anyway, but, with persistance, it can be done. its easy to get them KINDA sharp, but for a real razor edge, it is hard imho till ya get used to them. i have never tried a sharpmaker, but trust me a gatco dont work well, thats how i messed up the edge on my old CQC7, the angle just aint right, a sharpmaker might would do the trick though, but ya can do it free hand i promise, just takes practice.

good luck

oh oh oh i use the ultimate edge diamond hone, look at www.knifecenter under ultimate edge, its what i use specifically on my commander, works ok and is pretty cheap, $15 or so
