Hi!

I'm trying to sharpen my Mini CQC-7... and im looking for some suggestions. I have tried with stones, sharpmaker, ceramic bars, etc..

Dont get me wrong, I get it "sharp" to cut some things... but it still doesnt get SHARP. I think its because of the wrong angle. I wasnt even able to cut some rope yesterday.

Regards

If you follow the angle that was put on the edge from the factory you shouldn't have a problem getting it sharp. If you changed the bevel and made it steeper the knife will cut less easily. I personally use sandpaper wrapped around a small block to sharpen my Emersons. Take a Sharpie and color in the edge. It helps when sharpening so you can see if you are at the correct angle. When knocking off the burr on the non-locking side hold the sharpening media almost flat and only buff that edge.

Heres a link to a thread that explains it a little better - A basic owners guide for Emerson Knives

The blade profile on the CQC-7s limit the number of problems you could be having. You have two straight cutting edges to sharpen. It's best to do them separately as two different edges. Like Silvanus said, matching the factory angle is going to give you the best results. Use the marker like he suggested. Then make a few light strokes to find the right angle. After you've gotten the angle matched continue sharpening the bevel side until you can feel a small burr the entire length of the edge you're sharpening. Once you have the burr, turn the knife over, lay it almost flat, and lightly strop the back side a few times on a belt or a leather strop. I've even seen one guy use his wallet. All you want to do is take the burr off. Then proceed to the short edge on the tip and do the same thing. You can do this with a flat stone, round sharpeners, a Sharpmaker, sandpaper... the technique is the same no matter what you use.

It may take a bit of practice to get used to finding and holding the right angle for your knife. Emersons don't come with a consistent angle from knife to knife. They're hand sharpened and the angles will vary, so you have to find the angle for each knife if you want to match the factory ones.
