Hello everybody,
I have a black Buckmaster 184 which really needs to be sharpened and I was thinking of buying a Spyderco sharpmaker for that job.....

Any suggestions?

Will that system do the job if I want the blade to be "razor-sharp"?
Are there any tips, tricks or things I should look out for?

Thank you for your replies!!!

(Ps. I know that I could send it back to Buck but since I live in the Netherlands I'm afraid that is going to be too much of a hassle.)

Wow...over 600 active users at the moment and nobody has a clue of what I'm talking about?!?

Raoul,

I check the forum several times a day for new posts but I'm new to knives and have no experience in sharpening them. I would think that a little more patience would result in at least one worthy response to your question.

Sharpmaker good stuff:
The setup / putaway time is quick with minimal hastle.
It can be setup almost anywhere.
No lubricant mess to deal with.
It leaves a uniform edge bevil without scratching or spoiling polished surfaces.
It can be used for serated knives.
A shaving edge is easy to attain.

Sharpmaker not so good stuff:
It sharpens at two fixed angles. If your knife's edge angle is different, you will have to work the edge to fit the available angles. The included stones aren't coarse enough to do this efficiently. I lean a coarse corburundum stone against the supplied ones for this purpose. Work only one side at first until you can feel a burr form on the opposite side. The next time you sharpen the same knife, this step is not required. Merely use the supplied stones as descibed in the instructions.

That 184 may be a bear to sharpen becuase of how thick the edge is. I am not too familiar with the sharpeners listed above but have used the lansky a bunch, although not on a Buckmaster. Hopefully you will find a sharpening system that has an angle setting that matches the knife edge so your first sharpening wont be so hard.
