Sharpening my Mini 7

I used my lansky kit on the Emerson chisel recently, and it doesn't seem to be getting very sharp. I'm pretty sure i'm doing it right (since it is very simple). What could I possibly be doing wrong, and what do you suggest I do to get this thing sharp as hell again?

I need this thing to be sharp again!!

I usually just keep touching the edge up with a fine ceramic and/or strop rather than let it dull, but if I do need to sharpen it up I find its best to form
a burr on the un beveled side with a dimond stone, or what ever you like to use. Then knock the burr off with a super fine ceramic rod. After than I go to
a finer creamic stone and do it all again to get a "cleaner" edge then strop to finish it all off and get that nice crisp feeling edge. :)

i dont like lansky's or sharpmakers for emersons the angles not right, not on any i have used anyway.

if you got to www.emersonknives.com and follow the tutorial and use a decent flat stone (i use a norton india myself) and the back of a phone book as a strop ya will find its a lot easier than dealing with the wrong angles of the lansky's/sharpmakers.

as far as whats wrong at the present i would imagine ya arent raising a bevel.

'7s are about the easiest EKI to sharpen once ya get the hang of it.

Can't add much to what these guys said. Due to the chisel grind on the CQC 7, angle guide sharpeners are not a good option, however they are easy to sharpen by hand. Just do what Haze said.

fwiw--- I pull back on the water stone, not into it. Feel the burr then lightly buff or strop it off.

Thanks guys! I really wanted to get it done with the Lansky, but will try a flat stone or diamond stick. I'll report back with my results.

If you really want to use the Lansky it's probably a good idea to use it to rebevel the edge to what ever angle is closest to the original.
That way you will always be matching the same angle every time you use it, that may well be part of the problem you having just now.

if ya are stuck on the lansky what haze said is the only way its gonna work right imho, the angles simply are not right.

In the Emerson sharpening instructions, I noticed that he seems to sharpen away from the edge, as opposed to "cutting forward" into the stone/rod. Will either method work with the CG?

no, the other way you dont raise a "burr" and its not gonna get very sharp, do it like he says and its really easy, if you dont do it like that the results vary quite a bit and ya wont ever get it very sharp FWIW, once ya get the hang its as easy as any though.

I guess it's pretty much the same as when you do a convex grind then?
