sharpening my new bm 750

ok folks,i'm new to the knife thing so please don't laught too hard at my questions...as i've heard many bm's don't come that sharp out of the box, well this holds true with mine also. i like my blades very sharp and just recieved a smith's clamp/angle sharpening kit as a gift.i dont know how great this kit is (not that great i think)but i want my new knife sharp!what degree should i go with...20 or 25? should i use the fine grit since it's new or start with medium or coarse? any suggestions would be well appreciated....thax

i hear you on the dull benchmades. i now have 5 and only one was sharp. that one was an older panther. personally, i put about a 18-20 degree edge on mine. i just use mine for light duty. i never chop, or try to cut wire with them, there are better tools. when changing the bevel angle i always start with coarse and work up to the ultrafine. then i strop to finish. BM knows how to heat treat, mine stay really sharp for a long time. you just have to get them sharp in the first place. anyone else have opinions?

shawn,

If you want to preserve the factory angle, just use the felt pen trick. Mark the factory edge and try different angle on your Smith's kit. Don't apply pressure to hard first, just enough so you know where the exact angle is. You can also use a lower angle than stock to obtain scalpel sharp edge, but remember it usually won't last long. My bet is whichever the case, you'll want to use the x-coarse first to "adjust" your knife to your sharpening kit.

And please read Joe Talmadge's FAQ on sharpening, there are a lot of information on sharpening there. Click here: http://www.bladeforums.com/features/faqsharp.html

Shawn, I too have a 750 (really love it!) and I use the Spyderco 204 to sharpen it (30 degrees). Easy to do, slices through cigarette like it wasn't there. The only down side is that the guys at the corner store must think I'm a dope head. I'm always buying the papers but no tobacco
