I have started using a sharpmaker on my sebbie but am finding that the when doing the last stage (using the flat sides on the white rods) that the edge does not hold all that well, my questions are:

1) am I using it correctly? will I improve with practice?
2) is this a normal effect of using the flats
3) For a good utility edge would I be better stopping at stage 3 using the edge of the triangle.

Thanks for any advice.

I ussally just use the brown stones and strop the edge on blue jeans.I get a very sharp edge this way.If I go all the way I find that I dull the edge a little on the flats of the whites.

Thats sort of what I'm getting (I think) The edge feels sharper and sharper untill I use the white flats which still feels sharp but seems to dull very quickly. I guess what I'm trying to find out is whether this is expected or just poor technique on my part.

BTW does any ony have a PAL copy of the sharpmaker instruction video I could beg, borrow, steal or buy, my player should play NTSC but its very poor and difficult to see exactly whats happening

TIA

It may have alot to do with the type steel too.The whites seem to dull my 440V and S30v blades but VG10 seems like it finishes off very sharp on the whites.
Call Spyderco and they should have the video to send you.

I have a lansky sharpener and haven't started yet on my sebenza. What angle should I be setting the stones to?

I find that a really LIGHT stroke gets the best results. Keep the blade straight, and follow the curve of the blade.

Here's another possibility....check your white stones for imperfections (slight indents, or other blemishes), and mark them with a black sharpie. There have been numerous reports by members of these imperfections on sharpmaker stones, and the need to avoid them to get a good sharp edge.

If you can afford it, get the Edge pro Apex with the stone upgrade kit. I too had problems with the sharpmaker but a little practice with the Apex and I can put a consistant killer edge all the way to the point.

Steve D,
You could borrow my Sharpmaker video if you like. I'm in Jersey.
Yes, a Crapaud!

P.S. Does "D" stand for donkey?

Now you mention it I have noticed a slight roughness in some places, I'll watch out for that, thanks

Wondering if it is worth getting the diamond rods for the Sharpmaker for keeping my Sebenza and other knives in shape, or just using the brown ceramic ones that came with it?

Also, is it better to use the flat sides or the edges?

Many thanks!

If you already sharpened your Seb, with the gray sticks, you shouldn't need the diamond ones (at least for that knife), since you already set the bevel. The diamond hones are needed primarily for quicker stock removal when reprofiling, which can take many hours with the gray rods....believe me!
