Hey Guys...

So I have been using this here SG2 Blur for a while... And it is the SHIZZLE! But we already know that...
Just wondering what angle you guys sharpen yours at....
Or what you think it can handle....
I use 15 degrees per side. Then I finish with about 10 Strokes at 20 degrees per side for the micro bevel...
I have used it for light chopping and removal of green limbs, carving, slicing... you name it... its used on my worksite every day.... And also at home for food prep sometimes.. No micro chipping or any other issues...
Just wondering if I could go a little bit thinner? Eh..
Thanks
Matt

I wouldnt go thinner, the side support steel is there for a reason, and they are really thin already...

The support steel on the sides does not come into factor untill the temper line that you see... The SG2 itself is revealed about 3/8" from the edge, along the whole blade....
But yes the hollow grind is already really thin.... And yes it works just fine.... Perhaps it would be pushing my luck... This thing really spoiled me...
Matt

The SG2 is revealed untill the "weld" area at the green line...

Whatever...:p
Now those who didnt know.. Do...:D

From the lack of replys, and your awnswer.... I guess I shouldnt have asked....
I just would have though somebody would have tried it already? Maybe not...
Thanks J C

If you don't go whacking small tree branches, you can take SG2 down further. I have one at 16 inclusive. It's a razor! But it doesn't like a lot of abuse!

Its a good steel to play with. If you take it farther than you like, you can always micro-bevel it back! Have some fun with it!

16 inclusive? WOW!
I think im going to drop it down to about 12 per side with the 30 as the new micro bevel and see how that works... I will just have to take it easy on the thing at first , trial and error.... its the only way to go....
Wonder how long that will take on my sharpmaker?
I agree , I should play around with the edge a bit....

I fretted for a week about it before I started. It took me about three separate sharpenings...went to 22, then 20, and then 16. I probably won't keep it there. I'd like to see what a 20 convex would do.

15 per side for me, no microbevel. Stupid sharp, I have maybe 3 or 4 that are as sharp or sharper, and one of them would be another SG2 blade, the JYD II. Since I don't trust my freehand sharpening skills yet, 15 is as low as I'm willing to go, but with stropping, I can whittle hairs.

Same here...
At the 15 per side where mine is now... It cant whittle hairs since it has been used for a few days, but will easily shave without touching the skin.....

I would love to get another one of these to really mess around with it... But since this is my only knife to use right now... I cant fudge it up...

I've been afraid, as was SPX about taking my factory SG2 edges down any further, but it sure is tempting. Kudos to you guys for going for it;)

trimcut, as far as the Blur being the only user you have right now, I've seen lots of knife pics posted by you. Are ALL of your other knives really safe queens?, or do you constantly trade what you have for other blades?:D I have some knives that I wish I could say I never used, but I get too excited and always have to cut some stuff:)

JohnyMac....
Honestly... I have sold everything I owned over the past year and a half... as far as my knife and coin collection anyway...
The knives you have seen were all sold... And just the past few have been traded from one to another until I found the one I liked...
Currently I have one other K-shaw... a JYD from my GF... And a case stockman from my late G-pa....
Atleast for the time being...

I'm pretty sure every steel I've tried reprofiling so far has been perfectly fine at 10 degrees per side. Usual test materials are hardwood whittling, slicing thick cardboard, slicing through plastic bottles, some light chopping etc. Haven't used SG2 but I believe I recall others on the forum posting they had good results taking the steel to very thin edges.

I've considered taping the fusion area back to the spine and doing a flat drag on mine to convex the edge....assuming it ever actually loses its wicked edge...

The ultimate test IMHO is slicing toilet paper and push cutting newspaper. At 16, it performs both tasks flawlessly, including splitting hair.

What got me interested in the 20 convex was morrow_j's post about his CB Leek. He said he took it to 20 (just the actual cutting edge) and finished it with a convex. He mentioned one night as to how he was doing something with it, looked down and saw blood. He had sliced the tip off his finger, and said it was so sharp he didn't even notice it, until he found blood!

I run 15 deg/side with a 17 deg microbevel on my SG2 JYD with no problems. Finish sharpen by stropping on clay coated paper/cardboard.

All this talk about SG2 Blurs got my attention; never knew they were available in this steel. So I just picked one up on ebay - should be here in a few days. Why does the ss cladding extend only halfway down the blade? And why is the cladding needed anyway? (Pardon my ignorance)

The cladding isn't needed all the way down. SG2 is clad with two layers of a softer stainless steel (410) that provides additional strength, flexibility, and resistance to corrosion, I believe.

Very nice pick up, btw. You'll love it!
